Stepping off any international plane to Bali town, there is no confusion as to your final destination - your name is clearly displayed on a welcoming sign held by a smiling Spa Village Tembok concierge - your escort to your awaiting airport transfer. Inside the air-conditioned van say hello to chilled towels and fruit refreshments.
The two-hour drive from Ngurah Rai International airport to Bali's coastal Tembok passes quickly as amazing views of Balinese life and culture whizzes past. The bustling streets of popular tourist areas fade away, replaced with the enticing streets of Bali's creative capital, Ubud, on your journey to the other side of the island where paradise awaits. The people and shops disappear and volcanic mountain and jungle emerge. Feel any worries from the world you've temporarily left behind disappear, allowing room for the senses to envelope the famous Bali bliss treatment.
Driving into Spa Village Tembok, a red carpet of bamboo frames the entrance to a large open-air pagoda style lounge. There are smiles all round as you are greeted with a divine twenty-minute welcoming ritual of chilled and scented towels, a refreshment drink, a warm rose petal foot bath and a head, back and shoulder massage. What a welcom!
Spa Village Resort Tembok is pure exclusivity. Tembok is a small local village with school and a corner store but no other nearby shops. In the distance Mount Batur and Mount Agung volcanoes create a beautiful blue misty haze around the resort at sunset and sunrise. Visit the volcanoes or, from Spa Village Resort Tembok, head straight out to sea on a traditional boat to gaze back at the island's enchanting volcanoscapes - this is the most magical volcanic island view, and shows how isolated your paradise resort really is.
Rooms
The modern-meets-traditional rooms are air conditioned, overlooking beautiful scenic gardens. Rolling doors lead to a balcony where you can sit with a good book and listen to the water feature trickle - or enjoy the sunset by candlelight. The rooms feature comfortable beds, mood lighting, writing desk, and suitcase racks. Bathrooms are complete with modern toilet, bath and shower - decorated with candles, and fresh, locally handmade organic lotions and potions. As well as dressing gown and slippers, the option of fisherman's pants and top are offered to wear during the stay, ensuring your comfort.
There is a welcoming greeting from the resident manager to ensure your perfect stay, while a list of the abundant activities on offer are placed in room along with a gift of a complementary hand-crafted writing journal and pencil for when creative inspiration hits you.
Restaurant
The Wantilan Restaurant is al fresco and under a large thatched-roof pagoda canopy. Opposite the ocean and by the infinity pool, it's the perfect setting for sunset dining. As soon as you are seated, staff with big Balinese smiles serve refreshingly chilled health tonics along with chilled and scented towel to cool you down. The fresh juice tonics are combinations of strawberry and lemongrass, or banana, honey and cinnamon or strawberry, orange and pineapple, inducing an immediate healthy state of mind. At dinnertime the juice tonics become soups - warming seaweed or pumpkin are divine.
The Wantilan's menu features traditional and European delights, breakfast offered is American, Continental or a la carte. Be sure to try Banana Caramel, a serving of carmelised banana with French toast and jam. Just reading the drinks list which features delightful fresh juices and fruit smoothies, you'll feel an abundance of wellness. Concoctions featured are pineapple, orange, ginger and lime, or watermelon and fresh mint, or orange, aloe vera, papaya and lime.
Infinity pool
After filling your belly with divine fruits and juices, why not head barefoot straight to the infinity pool facing straight out to sea. Watch soft waves lapping at black volcanic sand, framed by palm trees and fragrant frangipanis as you lounge with other bathers on banana beds and luxury pagodas by the infinity pool. This is a perfect place for a chilled or energetically warming tea.
The gym
A modern gymnasium studio with state of the art equipment, lets you keep active in air-con. Slog away to groovy tunes whilst gazing out to ocean and garden views. Yoga classes are held regularly, including swing yoga; an apparatus that lets you practice airborne yoga moves, your circulation never felt so good!
Massage and spa
The Spa Village is correctly named, for the locally trained therapists are experts in their field. Smoothly kneading and stroking away any tension in your body with traditional balinese techniques, fragrances and music. All senses are embraced to have your mind, body and definitely spirit completely relaxed, rejuvenated and revitalized.
The Spa is literally a village of spa rooms - rows of rooms, with each room embracing a different theme - clay, coconut, glass or wood; with fabrics and potions used to match the theme. Be sure to try the Herbal Rejuvenation, which includes a volcanic steam bath - placing your legs into a sauna of volcanic rock mist, great for the skin and circulation. Heaven or Earth massages are available in the poolside's scenic setting.
Activities
Trips outside the resort can easily be arranged at reception, however the resort itself offers such an abundance of creative activities, you'll hardly want to leave! Activities fall into categories of Balance, Creativity, Vigor and Academy. Learn the popular craft of Balinese wood-carving or palm leaf weaving, take a sunset cruise on a traditional jukong, try starlight gazing from the infinity pool, or take a class in how to make your own organic body scrub. If you think you'll die without a television there is the movie room and laptop with internet available from reception.
Many creative artists are employed by the Resort to conduct programs for guests. I was lucky enough to take an art class with resident artist, Giovanna Caruso I learnt painting techniques and was encouraged to create a golden sunset masterpiece, with tips and suggestions from the Italian-born, Nepal based resident expert.
